Barrier Brewing Company was established in 2009, but the idea of opening a brewery dates back to early 2006. This was the year I began homebrewing. Like so many before me, it started as a hobby, but soon evolved into a complete change in lifestyle. I began interning at a local brewery, attending the American Brewers Guild IBS&E program, and homebrewing as much as possible (usually 1-2 times/week). All of these factors eventually led me to realization that I wanted to open my own craft brewery and make small batches of beer for enjoyment by the local community. In the 3 years since the homebrewing bug bit, the development of around 30 solid recipes have ensued. All of these beers have been perfected over multiple batches, and by the implementation of highly trained tasting panels (aka, friends who like to drink free beer).
Why We Do What We Do:
How We Do What We Do:
What We Use To Do What We Do:
Most beer is made using 4 main ingredients: malted grains (barley, wheat, rye), hops, brewers yeast, & water. Knowing this, we believe that it is essential to use the best possible raw materials. As a result, no expenses are spared, and you can perceive this in the quality of the finished product. Flawless technique is also imperative in order to produce consistent quality product. This leads to every batch being brewed to exacting parameters.

Brewing is an art as much as a science. With that in mind the below represents the general processes used in the production of beer:

The brewing process begins by milling the malted grains and mixing with hot water at a specified temperature to facilitate the conversion of starch to sugar; a process called mashing. A sweet liquid called wort is then filtered out of the mash tun and directed into the brew kettle where boiling commences. During the boil, hops are added at specific time intervals to add bitterness, and various aroma and flavor characteristics. After boiling the wort is passed through a heat exchanger, which cools the liquid down to an appropriate fermentation temperature (usually around 70 deg. F). The wort is then transferred to a fermentation vessel where the brewers yeast is added and fermentation commences. Once fermentation is complete (4-14 days depending beer style), the beer is transferred to a maturation tank where the beer is cold conditioned in order to clarify and carbonate the product. At the height of freshness, the beer is then racked to kegs and distributed to the local market.
Words to Live By
My goal through this endeavor is 3-fold:
Educate the local consumer to the variety and quality available in locally produced craft beer.
Create and produce beers of a caliber that cannot and have not been produced elsewhere.
Spread the word of great beer through the creation of great beer!!
Original Layout of the Barrier Brewing Company Facility
Exterior of Brewery. Might leave the graffiti... Self expression is very important.
All of our beer is produced with a one-barrel, stainless steel brewing system. Our maximum production capacity of this system with 11 fermentation vessels (1 barrel) will be approximately 400 barrels per year (1 barrel equals 31 gallons, which equals two standard 15.5 gallon kegs). During our first year of production, we will produce approximately 250 barrels. These numbers will place us among some of the smallest breweries in the world!

All of our ingredients come from the most reputable suppliers in the industry. The malted grains we use are imported from the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, France, Canada, & the United States. 90% of the hops we use are grown in the Pacific Northwest, with the remainder coming from Germany & the Czech Republic. Our yeast is purchased from yeast labs that maintain hundreds of proprietary and commercially available strains. Our water is provided by the Lloyd Aquifer which is located beneath Long Island (some of the best in the world!).
